Welcome to our Smart. Kind. Human. series, where we are featuring the amazing students who received $1,000 towards their post-secondary education through Serenia Life’s scholarship benefit in 2022*.

Doing their part to bring the HUMAN back into Humanity

And while all of them are smart and kind and human – obviously! – this month, we’re sharing quotes that demonstrate that this last group of winners have the human touch.

Alicia Christensen

“The world needs more happy people. It needs freedom and love and care. These can only be achieved by humans. Living without worry is the way towards a thriving world and a beautiful life.”

Conner Dunn

“In this camp of approximately 25 kids, I found that I would focus on keeping the curious kids attentive and creating alternative fun for the children who did not participate in the main activities. I was the leader at the back of the line, keeping everyone entertained when their focus could not be contained to just one objective.”

Jacob Nayre

Jacob Nayre
“My involvement in community development and outreach included engaging and interacting with diverse communities at large whether it be in Hamilton, Peel Region, or the GTA. My involvement is very much multi-ethnic and multicultural, especially among young people and young adults.”

Tyrese Hawthorne

My decision to go to college and now be in enrolled in an Honours Bachelor program was influenced by my family situation growing up and my habits to maintain a healthy lifestyle emotionally and physically. I hope to make a change through social work and help families like mine who try their best to make it work.

Shynelle Bryon

“I have decided to pursue a career in education. My hope for when I graduate is that I can become a teacher and be an example of how to live generously for all my future students.”

Simitha Ramthas

“I believe it’s crucial to try and find a way to support individuals who may not be as fortunate as I am and appreciate people in our lives that work towards making our world a better place.”

Sarah Guenther

“When [a friend] was isolated because of COVID-19, I sat outside her door for multiple hours a day, bringing her food, playing the guitar and singing for her, and studying with her.”

Jonah Fischer

Jonah Fischer
“Everybody makes mistakes with money in their life. I know I have. But it is very important to ask yourself if something is worth it before you give your hard-earned money away. I have learned this the hard way.”

Lynette Trinidad

Lynette Trinidad
“I believe that teaching youth to be aware and grateful for what they have, such as family, having an education, food to eat, and a safe place to live, can lead them to want less, and instead direct their attention to work and doing good deeds for others.”
